A symposium on data and health was held on August 26, 2024, at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Ethiopia. The event aimed to facilitate interdisciplinary networking among stakeholders working in health data science, promote the potential of big data, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies in transforming the health system, and introduce the various recently funded data science projects.
Invited speakers from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), Addis Ababa University (AAU), AHRI, Emory University, the NIH Fogarty International Center, and other institutions presented on a range of topics related to data science and its applications.
The symposium was organized by the Ethiopia-Emory TB Research Training Program (EETB-RTP), a partnership between Emory University and three Ethiopian institutes: AHRI, the School of Public Health at AAU, and EPHI, funded by a Global Infectious Diseases grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center.
Following the symposium, a three-day training workshop on “Genomic Epidemiology” was conducted at AHRI from August 27 to 29, 2024. This workshop was organized by EETB-RTP in partnership with the NIH Fogarty International Center and the Bioinformatics Unit of AHRI. Dr. Nidia Trovao and Dr. Sana Tamim from NIH Fogarty led the training, which was facilitated by the bioinformatics team at AHRI, headed by Bethlehem Adnew. Over 25 researchers, including PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and both former and current EETB-RTP fellows from EPHI, AAU, and AHRI, participated in the training.
