The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) recently hosted a high-level delegation from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for a strategic visit focused on strengthening collaboration in health research, innovation, and capacity building across the continent.
The Africa CDC delegation, led by Dr. Mosoka Fallah, Director of Science, Research, and Innovation, held extensive discussions with AHRI leadership on advancing joint initiatives in key areas, including traditional and modern medicine, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and cutting-edge technologies such as bioinformatics and genomics. These discussions aim to reinforce evidence-informed decision-making and build a resilient public health research ecosystem in Africa.
The visit began with a warm welcoming speech by Prof. Afework Kassu, Director General of AHRI, who emphasized the strategic value of the partnership. “Our collaboration with the Africa CDC is both timely and vital. It presents a unique opportunity to elevate public health research, promote innovation, and build a healthier Africa through shared expertise and resources,” he noted.
Afterward, Dr. Alemseged Abdissa, Deputy Director General for Medical Research, presented AHRI’s research portfolio and emphasized areas for potential collaboration. His presentation centered on biomedical and clinical research, pharmaceutical innovation, and the Institute’s partnerships with universities and health institutions to advance regional and national health agendas.
The meeting was attended by AHRI’s senior researchers and directors, who actively participated in the discussion and explored collaborative strategies with the Africa CDC team. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to promoting high-quality scientific research, strengthening health systems, and advancing training programs across African countries.
AHRI’s strategic location within the African Union compound in Addis Ababa presents a unique opportunity to serve as a continental hub for health research and capacity building. The Institute operates as a key technical arm of the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, providing scientific evidence to inform health policy and support evidence-based decision-making. It also collaborates closely with higher education institutions and international research networks.
Africa CDC officials expressed strong interest in utilizing AHRI’s infrastructure and expertise to implement joint training programs, support cross-border research efforts, and accelerate evidence generation to inform health policies and programming.
As part of the visit, Africa CDC delegates toured AHRI’s advanced research laboratories and facilities, highlighting their shared vision for regional integration and collaborative public health innovation.
