Five Decades of Excellence: AHRI Celebrates 55 Years of Research Impact

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) has announced the launch of an annual event to commemorate its 55 years of unwavering dedication to research, innovation, development, and production. This initiative aims to underscore AHRI’s profound contributions, both within Ethiopia and on the international stage.

The inaugural event, currently underway, is designed to showcase AHRI’s remarkable achievements in the health research sector over the past five decades. It serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders, including senior leaders from the health sector and various institutions, to gain insight into the significant progress made by the institute.

Since its inception, AHRI has been instrumental in advancing health research in Ethiopia and beyond its borders. The institute has consistently generated critical research findings that provide the foundation for evidence-based decision-making and foster innovation across the health landscape.

State Minister of Health,  Frehiwot Abebe, stated that as we are in a rapidly changing global system, research and study are essential to keep pace with upcoming changes. She announced, “In past years, the research outcomes from the institute have led to changes in many healthcare systems not only domestically but also at an international level. Specifically, numerous study and research results from the institute have entered international protocols, leading to changes in the systems, equipment, and processes we use to treat infectious diseases.”

3Operating under the expanded mandate of Council of Ministers Regulation No. 530/2015, AHRI is now actively engaged in a diverse range of research areas. These include biomedical, clinical, vaccine, diagnostic, and medical device research. Furthermore, the institute is at the forefront of developing both traditional and modern medicines, alongside making significant advancements in the pharmaceutical industry.

AHRI’s Director General, Professor Afework Kassu, stated, “For research and development efforts in the health sector to be successful and bring about the desired results for the community, all of us, as relevant stakeholders, must fulfill our responsibilities.” This comment underscores the importance of collaborative efforts that enable research findings to move beyond the laboratory and improve community health.
