Although Ethiopia has more than five decays of experience in using laboratory animals, the country has not had a standardized legal framework to guide this practice until now. The newly developed guideline by Armauer Hansen Research Institute establishes clear standards for housing, feeding, and providing Veterinary care for lab animals in line with best international practices. It also emphasizes the implementation of the “3Rs” principles: Replacing animals with alternatives where possible, Reducing the number of animals used, and Refining procedures to minimize their suffering.

Beyond developing the guideline, the Armauer Hansen Research Institute is taking a leading role in strengthening laboratory research in Ethiopia. AHRI is establishing standardized laboratory animal facility, introducing a new laboratory animal breed and providing training to professionals in the field. This guideline is intended for use across all public and private higher education institutions and research centers. By promoting consistent standard and ethical practice, it is expected to enhance Ethiopia’s scientific competitiveness and commitments to ensure the welfare and responsible use of laboratory Animals.
