To strengthen collaboration in health research and innovation, the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three Ethiopian universities: Wollo University, Debre Markos University, and Raya University. The MoU signing ceremony was held at AHRI in Addis Ababa.
The agreement aims to enhance health research partnerships by promoting collaborative research, research training, and capacity-building initiatives that align with AHRI’s mandate to generate evidence for improving health outcomes. The partnership will also support the development of innovative solutions to address key public health challenges in Ethiopia.

AHRI Director General, Professor Afework Kasu, emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between research institutions and universities. He noted that AHRI will continue strengthening its collaboration with academic institutions through knowledge exchange, joint research activities, and information sharing.

“AHRI is committed to working closely with universities and providing the necessary support to advance research and innovation,” he said.
The presidents of Wollo University, Debre Markos University, and Raya University also highlighted that the agreement will enhance research capacity and promote collaborative efforts to address pressing health challenges. They noted that the partnership will enable the institutions to jointly design research projects, develop innovative initiatives, and support locally driven solutions.

The collaboration will also take advantage of AHRI’s state-of-the-art research complex and advanced laboratory facilities, providing opportunities for university researchers and staff to access modern research infrastructure and share resources.
Through this partnership, the institutions aim to strengthen indigenous knowledge, reduce duplication of research efforts, and foster product development and innovation that can contribute to improving the national health system.
The MoU marks an important step toward building a stronger national research ecosystem by promoting sustainable collaboration between AHRI and Ethiopian universities in health research, training, and capacity development.
