ADDIS ABABA – Following its high-profile inauguration by H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the newly completed, world-class laboratory complex of the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was officially toured by the Institute’s staff and invited dignitaries.
The visit served as both a technical walkthrough of the advanced facilities and a celebration of the collective effort required to bring this monumental project to fruition.

From Humble Beginnings to a Continental Powerhouse
During the opening remarks, Professor Afework Kassu, Director General of AHRI, reflected on the Institute’s remarkable journey. Established at ALERT Hospital with Professor Morten Harboe as its first director, AHRI has evolved through decades of leadership and institutional growth.
“AHRI started with fewer than 20 employees,” Professor Afework noted. “Today, it stands as a giant institution with over 700 dedicated professionals. This facility is a beacon of hope that merges modern science with indigenous capacity, creating a legacy that will serve generations to come.”
He emphasized the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge into formal scientific frameworks to address local and global health challenges effectively.

A Global Asset for Health Security
The Director General highlighted that the laboratory complex is not merely a national achievement but a critical asset for Africa and the global health research community. The facility is designed to:
• Enhance national health security.
• Strengthen diagnostic and vaccine research capabilities.
• Provide a collaborative space for international health scientists.
Honoring Excellence and Partnership
A key highlight of the event was an award ceremony recognizing individuals and organizations that demonstrated exceptional commitment during the transition of the complex into full operational status.
A special recognition was wardrobes to ALERT Comprehensive Specialized Hospital for its pivotal role and unwavering support in facilitating the transition to the new facility.

A New Chapter in Ethiopian Science
The tour concluded with a sense of shared pride among AHRI staff. As a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s health research history, this modern complex represents a “new chapter” dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of the nation through rigorous scientific inquiry and innovation.
