A New Era in Ethio-China Health Cooperation: Mission Launched to Bolster AHRI’s Research Capacity

ADDIS ABABA – As part of Ethiopia’s strategic push toward health sector self-sufficiency, a high-level Chinese Senior Expert Advisory Mission has officially commenced its technical support program at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI).

Running from May 10 to June 15, 2026, the mission is designed to foster sustainable capacity building across several critical scientific disciplines. The program focuses on enhancing AHRI’s capabilities in:

  • Laboratory Leadership and Management
  • Biosafety and Biosecurity
  • Genetic Engineering
  • Clinical Trials and Bioequivalence (BE)
  • Bioanalytical Services

During the launch, H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, emphasized that this partnership represents a profound investment in human capital. “Beyond technical support, we are taking a decisive step to ensure our modern infrastructure is matched by world-class skills, operational excellence, and scientific leadership,” she stated.

H.E. Ambassador Chen Hai, China’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, underscored AHRI’s role as a cornerstone for Ethiopia’s “Health Independence.” He reaffirmed China’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s medical sovereignty.

Professor Afework Kassu, Director General of AHRI, reflected on the institute’s 56-year journey—evolving from a specialized leprosy research center into a continental hub for innovation. He noted that this mission would further bridge the gap between AHRI and leading Chinese research and academic institutions.

The advisory mission will work side-by-side with Ethiopian experts to modernize laboratory systems and accelerate local research in drug development, vaccines, and genomic technology.
