Addis Ababa — The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) Tore Godal Award Committee has named three young and promising scientists as the winners of the 23rd Tore Godal Award for their outstanding contributions to medical research in Ethiopia.
Inspired by the vision of Dr. Tore Godal, this prestigious annual award plays a vital role in enhancing the quality and scope of health research in the country, while elevating young researchers to the next level of scientific excellence.
This year’s 23rd round of the award recognized exceptional research focused on malaria prevention and control. The winners are:
- Hermela Birhanu
- Beza Garedew
- Natnael Lemessa

In a message to the laureates, the Director General of AHRI, Professor Afework Kassu, extended his heartfelt congratulations on their remarkable achievement. He noted that these young scientists have made invaluable contributions to an ever-expanding field of knowledge, specifically paving the way for evidence-based decision-making in the national effort to combat malaria.
Professor Afework also expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Tore Godal Award Committee for their exemplary evaluation of the applications and for selecting the best among the nominees.
Furthermore, the Director General reaffirmed his deep respect and gratitude to Dr. Tore Godal, who served as the Director General of AHRI from 1970 to 1973. Dr. Godal founded and continues to financially support this prestigious award, which aims to recognize excellence among young scholars in the health and biomedical science research and development sector in Ethiopia.
