[Addis Ababa, Ethiopia] – March 25, 2025 – Data Science Without Borders (DSWB) has successfully completed its Data standardization and harmonization training using Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) , held from March 10th to 14th, 2025. This capacity-building initiative aimed to equip healthcare researchers and analysts with the essential skills to effectively utilize OMOP’s standard for better management and harmonization of observational healthcare data.
The training, designed to address the growing need for expertise in using multiple data sets in a standardized and harmonized manner, drew participants from institutions across Ethiopia, including Amhara Public Health Institute, Haremaya University, Armauer Hansen Research Institute, and Oromia Health Bureau.
Facilitated by experts from African Population and Health Research Center APHRC and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine LSHTM , the program provided a comprehensive understanding of OMOP common data model, different related tools, and methodologies. The training employed a dynamic approach, incorporating lectures, hands-on sessions, case studies, and group discussions to ensure a practical and engaged learning experience.
“The training benefit us to bring distributed data-sets of relevant domain together, analyze and make use of it for decision making, policy and health implementation” said Bethlehem Adnew, A bio-informatician and DSWB’s Co-principal investigator at AHRI.
DSWB’s successful completion of this training significantly enhances the ability of Ethiopian healthcare professionals to conduct robust observational data research, furthering the organization’s commitment to improved regional healthcare outcomes through data science.
