Grand Challenges Ethiopia

Grand Challenges Ethiopia is an initiative of Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH)officially launched in October, 2015 during the 17th Annual Review Meeting and hosted in AHRI. It is part of the Global Grand Challenges family of initiatives and partners with the Grand Challenges Programs of Grand Challenges Canada, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and USAID to stimulate the creation, appraisal, promotion and scale up of innovative ideas and concepts that are responsive to the defining health-related challenges and assist in the effective implementation of the health sector transformation plan (HSTP) of FMoH and contribute to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Grand Challenges is a family of initiatives fostering innovation to solve key global health and development problems
The principal objectives of Grand Challenges Ethiopia are

  • Stimulate innovations that solve the health sector challenges and contribute to achieve SDGs in priority areas of Newborn and childhood health Maternal health Pastoralist and other least developed regions’ health services
  • Test innovations and technological solutions surfaced elsewhere but are applicable in our setting
  • Test and adapt Innovations and technological solutions that have occurred elsewhere in the world, which are cost-effective, socially and culturally acceptable, potentially impactful and scalable
  • Invest in implementation of selected innovations at scale Evaluate potential cost and impact of each innovation towards ensuring provision of equitable, quality health services in short-term and/or achieving SDGs in the long-term, and test innovations for implementation at scale

  • Mechanism Provide up to 20 seed grants per year for proof of concept innovations on competitive basis. Select and provide funding for Testing innovations surfaced elsewhere that are application in our setup. Fund transition to scale innovations (Select effective and impactful innovation for wider implementations)
    • Grand Challenges Ethiopia is looking for
    • Innovators (Individuals or Group of Individuals) Who has/have bold innovative ideas with high impact in maternal, child and pastoralist Community health, and interested to explore and test can apply for Seed Grant funding Who has/have innovations and interested to implement can apply to transition to scale funding
    • Universities and Research Centers Interested in testing and validating innovations can apply for innovation validation Grants
    • Government and non-government partners Interested in fostering innovations to achieve HSTP and SDG are welcome to collaborate with GCE
